Installing BIOS upgrade on AJP machines.
FIRST
IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE MACHINE CONNECTED TO THE MAINS AT ALL TIMES DURING THE UPDATING PROCESS. IF THE UPDATING PROCESS DOES NOT COMPLETE SUCCESSFULLY THERE IS A DANGER THAT THE BIOS CHIP COULD HAVE BEEN DAMAGED AND THE RESULT WOULD BE AN UNBOOTABLE MACHINE.
STEP 1: Download the lastest BIOS in zip format for your machine. Make sure it is the correct BIOS for your model. (If you are unsure do not proceed.) Extract the contents of the zip file to your machine. You will need a zip program for this. You can download an evaluation copy of WinZip from their site. Click here go there. Then in most cases, but NOT ALL , you will need to do the following: (If you are unsure as to how to proceed once you have downloaded the relevant file, contact technical support by phone and they will guide you through the process. STEP 2: Booting from a floppy diskette.
You will need to create a bootable diskette. There are many ways to do this but a nice utility that does this is called DrDOS 7.X which you can obtain from here . Once you download DrDOS 7.X, run it. It will ask you to put a blank disk into the floppy disk drive. Do so and click OK. It will then start writing to the disk. Once it has finished you now have a disk which you can boot from. Label this disk "Boot disk" . Now copy the content of the zip file from STEP 1 to a different blank formatted 1.44Mb floppy diskette. Label this disk "BIOS Update" .
STEP 3: Instigating the BIOS update.
Switch off your notebook computer, and insert the "Boot disk" into the floppy drive. Turn on the computer, the machine will report it is booting from the floppy. After the machine has successfully booted from the floppy, remove "boot disk" and insert the "BIOS Update" disk into the floppy disk drive. Finally type "go" and then press the return key. You should now see the FLASH BIOS Programmer load. You will see your BIOS being erased and then programmed. The machine will then inform you it is safe to turn off the computer. REMOVE THE "BIOS UPDATE" DISK NOW. The machine has now been upgraded to the newest BIOS. Reboot the machine to allow the new BIOS to be loaded.
What to do if you have problems
I get an Invalid Flash ID Error Message:
If this occurs, The machine may need a few dip switches to be set before the flashing of the BIOS can take place. Consult the user manual for the location of these dip switches. These are normally located underneath the keyboard. Then go through the procedure again from STEP 3 .
We hope the above information is sufficient to enable you to upgrade your BIOS. Meanwhile if you have any problems do not hesitate to contact our Technical Support Department.
